Silhouette Surfer

In 2023, ASPC decided to hold a photography competition. The results were so encouraging, with many entrants and a uniformly very high standard, that we decided to do it again, in 2024.

Building on the experience we are very pleased to extend the competition into 2025. The standard of entries were really impressive yet again.

Twelve winners have been chosen and, in addition to receiving a modest gift, will be featured on our website homepages - one per month.

Our March winner and commencing the 12 month cycle is Kate Spink.

Kate’s arresting image, of a surfer caught in what could be a perilous moment, has immediate impact. The instant caught by Kate leaves us speculating – did the surfer continue on the crest, or did the sea overwhelm them?

Along with the tension in the image (the striking silhouette in stark black) the picture conveys a strong sense of dramatic action.

Kate deserves our admiration for her skill in capturing this moment pregnant with potential.

Many of us may be unaware just how popular surfing is becoming. The North Sea is not the warmest water in which to pursue the sport. There is, nonetheless, an active core of enthusiasts (have a look at www.surfline.com).

For myself, I like to think this surfer had the skill to overcome this moment of peril and completed the journey to the shore – stirred but not shaken.

If you’re interested in learning more about each one of our images as part of our photography competition, then why not take a look at one of our previous submissions, here.
