Ways to make your home more energy efficient

1. Lower the thermostat – Lowering the thermostat by just one degree can save you up to £80 per year. Consider programmable thermostats or smart meter technology for more control over your heating, several recent smart solutions even offer WiFi connectivity, allowing them to be configured remotely via an app.

2. Replace light bulbs – Modern low energy bulbs are approximately 10 times more efficient than traditional filament lamps, making a real difference to your electricity bill. Couple this with the added benefit that the average lifespan of an LED bulb is 20 times that of its incandescent counterpart.

3. Change shower heads – If your property has a shower that takes hot water straight from your boiler, switch to a low-flow shower head to improve your home’s water efficiency. Swapping your shower head could save a four-person household as much as £70 a year on gas for water heating.

4. Eco-friendly appliances – From fridge-freezers and tumble dryers to kettles and vacuums – there are lots of eco-friendly versions available. It’s estimated that If every household in the UK switched to an eco-friendly kettle, over £150 million of energy could be saved per year.

5. Insulate the attic – An uninsulated home will lose around a quarter of its heat through the roof. Although slightly more costly, over time the benefits of attic insulation will outweigh the initial outlay.

6. Consider replacing windows – Replacing your windows may be expensive but it also has benefits beyond reducing your energy bills, such as reducing external noise and condensation.

7. Draught-proof your home – Draught-proofing around windows, doors and chimneys that aren’t in use helps prevent heat escaping from your home.

8. Switching off – One of the quickest ways to make your home more energy efficient is to switch appliances off, rather than leaving them on standby. Doing so could save you approximately £30 per year.
