Things to do in Aberdeenshire in 2019
Aberdeen was recently named as one of ‘52 places to go in 2019’ by The New York Times, taking the 24th spot ahead of popular tourist destinations New York and Marseille. The international newspaper talks of Aberdeen’s Caledonian sleeper, historic castles, hiking trails, dramatic coastline and the royal history at Balmoral.
Although the city is loved by locals and tourists alike, those of us who live here know there are plenty of other things to do in our beautiful area. With this blog, we take a look at some of the great events and activities lined up in Aberdeenshire for 2019.
Gin is the most up and coming spirit in the country, with distilleries popping up more and more in the North East. The True OriGINs Gin Festival in Inverurie gives you the chance to discover over 70 Scottish gin brands, with masterclasses, tastings, Scottish street food and live music.
Another part of Aberdeen’s culture is the long history of promoting live music and entertainment in the many grand theatres and quirky venues. The end of March sees a host of talented musicians and performers descend on the city for the Aberdeen Jazz Festival, where jazz and blues can be enjoyed in the many workshops and laid-back gigs.
If comical entertainment is more your thing, the Aberdeen Comedy Festival brings 250 comedians to stages right across the city. Held at the start of October, the festival includes a mix of local talent and experienced performers, so there’s bound to be something to tickle your funny bone.
If you’re interested in getting to know the local foodie culture a little more, then the Aberdeen Restaurant Week in July is the perfect opportunity to give it a try, offering lots of unique discounts on a number of restaurants throughout the granite city.
On the 1st of June, the Taste of Grampian food and drink festival brings the best products from the North East of Scotland to Inverurie. Celebrity chef John Torode from BBC’s MasterChef will be headlining the event, joined by this year’s celebrity MasterChef finalist Spencer Matthews. As well as sampling some of the best local produce, there will also be live music, street performers, cookery demonstrations and children’s entertainment.
Running for over 150 years, the Aboyne Highland Games is one of the most prestigious in Scotland. Following a traditional highland games day, there will be pipe bands, heavy athletics, a clan tent and of course highland dancing! Taking place on the 3rd of August it’s sure to be a great culture filled day for all the family.
With the city’s long history and reputation in science and engineering, the Techfest is a great one to take the children along to. The festival involves interactive talks, tours and activities that gives everyone a chance to learn about science, technology and engineering in a fun and engaging way. Starting on the 24th of August through to the 21st of September, it’s three weeks of fun for all the family.
