The much-anticipated expansion of Aberdeen’s harbour is due to be completed in 2020. Investment of £350 million will extend the harbour at Nigg Bay and is expected to bring many benefits to the area. Development will involve the construction of four new quays to allow large cruise ships to berth at the harbour. By giving more tourists the chance to visit Aberdeenshire, it has been said that each larger ship could generate up to £350,000 of visitor spend in the area. The larger harbour will also bring potential for growth in other industries, such as decommissioning work.

The construction of the harbour is well underway, with the contractor confirming that the drilling and blasting work has started. Although the noise will be lessened by the works taking place under water, the construction team are adhering to strict schedules to stay within guidelines to minimise disturbance for local residents.

Construction of the harbour development is not the only work taking place. In the background, Aberdeen Harbour Board and their partners have been spreading the word about the expansion and gathering enquires to ensure this investment will be a success for Aberdeenshire. The cruise project manager at Visit Aberdeenshire, Richard Corrigan, has stated he has been around the world promoting Aberdeen as a cruising destination. It appears his efforts have begun to pay off, as the first booking is now secured for 2020. The cruise ship, Azamara Quest, run by Azamara Cruises will visit the new harbour as part of its Scottish cruise itinerary.

With construction underway and bookings already secured, the need to name the four South Harbour Quays became more pressing. After gaining the royal family’s blessing, the decision was made to name the quays after some of Scotland’s most famous castles, paying tribute to the rich history and culture of the North East. The Aberdeen Harbour Board has named the east quay Dunnottar Quay, the south quay Crathes Quay, the west quay Balmoral Quay and the north quay Castlegate Quay.

The centre allows the public to keep in touch with the project as it develops, providing information on progress, the history of the area and the reasons behind the expansion. The centre is located at Walker Park, by the Girdle Ness Lighthouse and is open to the public every Saturday between 10am and 3pm. Local schools and organisations are welcome to make visiting appointments during the week.
