The North Sea at Peterhead – Why it’s Rita Marcella’s favourite view
Each of us has a spot in the North East that we hold close to our heart, and our 2018 calendar sets out to share just what these special views mean to us.
For each month, we have asked someone with a connection to either ASPC, or Aberdeenshire itself, to choose a location and tell us why it is significant to them, showcasing the view with a beautiful image from photographer Ray Smith.
Our atmospheric July location has been chosen by Rita Marcella, Professor of Information Management at Robert Gordon University: “This glorious view sums up for me, much of my childhood in Peterhead. It’s the view from my grandfather’s house of the magnificent, but moody North Sea, that surrounds Peterhead and creates its special magic.”
It is believed that Peterhead, as the town stands today, was founded around 1593 by George, nephew to the Earl of Marischal, William Keith. During this time, there were only 56 inhabitants of Keith-Inch – formerly an island but which now makes up part of Peterhead Harbour. It was during this time that Peterhead’s first harbour, Port Henry, was constructed, establishing the area as a prominent fishing and trade port. The population of the Town grew in parallel to the area’s strong fishing reputation. There are now over 18,000 residents and Peterhead is recognised as one of Europe’s largest white-fish ports, as well as the largest fishing port in the UK. Peterhead is also known for a variety of industries, including oil, food processing and textiles.
What has helped form the greatness of Peterhead, is indeed the provisions of the North Sea. As in Rita Marcella’s favourite view, the North Sea is both tempestuous and serene. The fishing port has a bustling leisure marina, cruise ships can be admired in the water and there is a daily fresh fish market to enjoy.
You can also get more involved in experiencing the sea by hopping onto one of Misty Sea’s boats, where you can learn fishing skills or simply take in the breathtaking surroundings. Or, if you would simply rather admire from afar, Peterhead has several quality golf courses in the area each with their own charms. The North Sea wind will certainly add an element of interest to your game!
The rich history, thriving port culture and special views clearly make Peterhead a wonderful place to live and visit.
