Five things to do in Montrose

The costal location of Montrose makes it a great location to live in or visit. In the first of a series of blog posts, we look at five ways to spend time in the town.

1: Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre

You may not have known this, but Montrose had the first operational military airfield in Great Britain and the Heritage Centre is located on this.

With aircrafts, wartime artefacts and memorabilia, the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre provides lots of hands-on opportunities and is a great day out for both adults and children.

The Heritage Centre is run by the Ian McIntosh Memorial Trust.

2: Montrose Seafront

With three miles of golden sand, the beach at Montrose is the perfect place to spend a sunny day!

Purpose-built play area Seafront Splash offers a park and paddling pool for the little ones, while the beach itself allows for football, flying a kite or even sunbathing (weather permitting, of course!)

Plenty of car parking and picnic areas make it a great place to spend an afternoon.

3: House of Dun

Based three miles outside of Montrose, the House of Dun is a stunning Georgian house built in 1730 by William Adam.

The house has beautiful interiors, with plasterwork by Joseph Enzer (known as ‘the Scottish de Vinci’) one of the key highlights – Enzer actually dipped certain items such as oak leaves and a violin in plaster as part of the ornate decoration.

For those not interested in interiors, beautiful Victorian gardens outside are a great way to spend an hour or two on a sunny day.

4: Montrose Music Festival (Mo Fest)

Taking place in May every year, the Montrose Music Festival (Mo Fest) is a three day live music event.

The first Montrose Music Festival took place in 2008 and led to thousands of visitors to the town, while the 2016 Mo Fest is due to be headlined by Jools Holland.

Madness and Status Quo are among other bands who have performed as part of the Festival.

5: Charleton Farm

Fancy something fruity? Charleton Fruit Farm is great fun for both adults and children.

Pick your own strawberries, raspberries and tayberries, then celebrate a job well done with homemade food in the tea rooms.

There are also two outdoor play zones: one gated for under 12s, and another for older kids (and grownups!)

Whether you’re one of the gable endies or a visitor, there is a lot to do in Montrose – we hope you enjoy your time there!
