Spring is normally considered the best time to sell a property, but with more flexible work schedules and plentiful opportunities to make a property seem more homely, ASPC takes a look at why winter can be wonderful.

Whilst the housing market tends to slow before Christmas there’s no reason whilst your property can’t be sold in December, or at least  get a head start with the New Year’s rush.

Don’t forget your exterior

During the winter months it’s easy to forget about the outside of your property, concentrating instead on keeping cosy inside. It’s important to consider though, that first impressions do count, and the outside of your home is the first thing a potential buyer will see; so make sure it’s up to scratch.

Paths clear of ice and leaves ensure no accidents before they’ve even got in the door, and windows, walls and gutters should be cleared of any dirt or debris.

Let there be light!

During evening viewings it’s important to create a cosy and welcoming environment for visitors, to get away from the cold and dark. Having an outdoor light can be more inviting- so be sure to check your outdoor light bulb is working. If possible, arrange daytime viewings, to allow visitors the opportunity to see the garden and exterior in all its glory.

Turn up the thermostat

Having the heating on is a great way to encourage buyers to have an extra wander around before leaving. They will be able to picture themselves cuddled up on the couch if you make the place warm, bright and inviting, a nice scented candle never goes amiss either.If you’re lucky enough to have a working fireplace, an evening viewing is the perfect time to show it off.

Celebrate the season, not clutter

The winter season is often where you find your house being filled with bits and pieces of clutter. Whether it is Christmas gifts waiting to be wrapped or forgotten scraps of wrapping paper make sure you’ve mopped it all up before a potential buyer pops in.

You might be tempted to fling festive cheer onto every surface, but consider stripping back on the tinsel a little: you don’t want to overwhelm viewers when they come into your property. Now is also the time where your garden furniture can start to look a little bare, unkempt and sad, so pop it in the garage and make sure your garden is looking fresh.  

Do DIY

It’s easy to forget about basic DIY jobs when the weather is cold outside and you just want to cosy up, but they can stick out like a sore thumb against a winter backdrop. Make sure to polish and primp and consider odd jobs like cleaning out your fridge and dusting! Consider painting your front door, fence or gates a bright, bold colour. They’ll stand out against the dark skies and be memorable.

With a few small touches you can make your home look welcoming and cosy even during the dark winter months, and don’t forget the standard selling tips, just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean they don’t count.
