Balmedie

Balmedie is a large village in Aberdeenshire located north of the city in the civil parish of Belhelvie. The village is home to an award-winning beach, Balmedie country park, which hosts a wide range of wildlife and expansive sand dunes. The beach stretches 14 miles from Aberdeen to just north of the Ythan Estuary at Newburgh. The area sits within the Sands of Forvie Site of Special Scientific Interests, the fifth-largest dune system in Britain.

The village is home to a population of 2,560 and has excellent transport links with a regular bus service linking the area with Aberdeen, Ellon, Peterhead, and Fraserburgh. Within easy access of the AWPR (A90), a commute to the centre of Aberdeen has been reduced to as little as 15 minutes since the route was opened, while also providing quick access to many of the other surrounding towns. Balmedie boasts several local amenities including a library, sports centre, a small supermarket, and a pharmacy.

Balmedie is home to one primary school with a nursery unit, Balmedie school, making it a great location for young families. The primary school has over 400 pupils and around 120 infants enrolled in the nursery. There is also another independent nursery located in the centre of the village, Links Nursery Balmedie, which has been operating in Balmedie since 1995.

The local secondary school, Ellon Academy, is located in the nearby town of Ellon and is a non-denominational school with 1,088 pupils supported by 80 teaching staff. The academy is a comprehensive secondary school with a long tradition of excellence and positive relationships with the local community.

Balmedie offers brilliant transport links to surrounding schools, with Aberdeen Council providing free transport to children who live over three miles away from the school they are currently enrolled in.

Things to do in Balmedie

Keen golfers will find plenty of opportunities to play in Balmedie with the Trump International Golf estate on their doorstep. The course features 18-holes threading their way through the dunes of Balmedie Country park, rising to provide a view of the breath-taking coastline. The estate also boasts luxury dining and hotel facilities with rooms to host private functions.

Walkers have lots to explore in the surrounding area as you can walk the coastline for several miles with access via the car park. There are several amenities on the beach including a ranger centre, toilets, and shops. Located beside the beach is The Sand Bothy, a community building which provides the opportunity to learn about the surrounding wildlife and attend community events, as well as a small kiosk selling hot and cold drinks.

The village has four small play parks, two full-sized football pitches, and a sports centre. The Balmedie leisure centre includes two outdoor five aside pitches, a fitness suite, and two sports halls. There is also a coffee shop in the sports centre which serves all-day breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and ice-creams.
