History of Sauchen

The village is nearby both Cluny Castle (in private ownership) and Castle Fraser, garden and estate (owned by the National Trust for Scotland). These castles date back to the 14th and 16th century respectively and historical tours available along with a programme of events is available at Castle Fraser.

Whilst Sauchen may be a small village, there remains a host of things to do in the surrounding area including:

  • Castle Fraser 

Step back in time at one of Scotland's largest tower houses, dating to 1450. Explore the Fraser lairds' history, stroll through a vibrant walled garden, and enjoy fresh local produce in the courtyard tearoom. The extensive parkland offers trails to spot wildlife, making it a family-friendly destination with regular events year-round. 

  • Pitfichie Woods 

A gorgeous varies woodland, encompassing a range of sights, such as the Whitehill Stone Circle.  The hiking trails lead you towards open hill tops with beautiful views. There is also a red grade mountain biking trail with a challenging downhill route for those willing to give it a go.
