Banff is an old county town and a Royal Burgh that is situated 45 miles north of Aberdeen. It is located at the mouth of the River Deveron which separates Banff from the neighbouring town of Macduff. The town has a current population of 3,820,

Housing in Banff spreads outwards from the A98 road that runs through the centre of the town. Traditional granite single and two story homes lie to the north side of the road towards the town’s harbour, with more modern family homes on the south side of the road inland.

History of Banff

The history of the town dates back to the 12th century when Banff’s first castle was established to repel Viking invaders. Many of the town’s period houses date from the 17th and 18th century, with the layout of the town consisting of a Georgian upper town and an older Scotstown by the harbour.

 

Things to do in Banff

William Adam’s magnificent 1730 mansion, Duff House, can be found in Banff. Duff House operates as an outstation for the National Galleries of Scotland, with extensive grounds that offer pleasant woodland walks. Banff features a wide range of local amenities and a great range of activities in the local area including golfing, fishing, walking, cycling and more. A number of castles and distilleries can also be found along the picturesque coastline and surrounding area. 

For those who like to keep active, the Deveron Community and Sports Centre provides a range of ways to keep fit and enjoy leisure time. The facility includes a swimming pool, fitness suite, full-size synthetic pitch, squash courts, a 4-court sports hall, a climbing wall, an outside athletics arena, as well as a steam room and sauna among other amenities. Other popular facilities include the meeting rooms and a regular playgroup. With this state-of-the-art centre offering such a wide selection of activities, Banff is an attractive place to live for people with all interests and young families. 

Schools in Banff

There are eight primary schools in Banff’s catchment area, six of which include a nursery unit. Banff Primary School is situated in the town centre and is one of the most popular, with around 465 pupils and 120 nursery pupils. As well as this school, there are Aberchirder, Bracoden, Fordyce, Macduff, Ordiquhill, Portsoy and Whitehills Primary Schools, which are all located in the surrounding areas. These schools all feed into Banff Academy, which, not far from the primary school, has just over 800 pupils.
