History of Ballater
Ballater has been in existence since the 14th century when it was part of the estates of the Knights of St John. However the settlement did not fully start to develop until around 1770 when it came to be known as a spa resort for its close proximity to the Pannanich Mineral Well.
Situated immediately east of the Cairngorm Mountains, Ballater is known for its close proximity to Balmoral Castle - one of the official residences of the British Royal Family - which was purchased in 1892 by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Many of Ballater’s shops hold Royal Warrants as a result of the area’s close royal connections. The Royal Lochnagar Distillery, situated near Balmoral, is known for producing one of Scotland’s most highly regarded whiskies, the Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old Single Highland Malt.
