History of Aboyne

Historical sites in and around Aboyne include the 13th century Aboyne Castle and Tomnaverie Stone Circle, which dates back approximately 4,000 years. The placing of a castle in Aboyne is related to the limited number of crossings available for the Mounth, the range of hills on the southern edge of Strathdee that makes up part of the Grampian Mountains. Aboyne also played an important role in the Jacobite uprising, acting as the scene of a great hunt in September 1715, which was actually a cover for a meeting of Jacobite nobles and lairds.
