Food Festivals in the North East
If you find yourself at a loose end over the summer, give your taste buds a treat by sampling the North East’s finest gastronomical offerings, at some of the region’s numerous food festivals. These events are quickly growing in popularity, which is unsurprising, given the area’s rich culinary history.
There are some excellent food and drink events taking place in 2018, sure to satisfy cravings and quench your curiosity.
Scottish Traditional Boat Festival
Enjoy something out of the ordinary at the Portsoy Scottish Traditional Boat Festival. Boats, food, drink, crafts and music combine for an exciting celebration of the region’s cultural heritage.
Attendees can expect a wide range of meats, fish and of other local ingredients using traditional methods. Catch one of the live food demonstrations and be tempted by the weekend’s dishes.
The festival runs over the weekend of 30th June - 1st July. A wide range of ticket types are available to buy here.
Summer at Crathes
The stunning 16th century Crathes Castle is host to a fabulous food and crafts event called Summer at Crathes. This year is the fair’s biggest showcase yet, with stalls spread throughout the castle, Horsemill event space and beautifully maintained gardens. Whilst taking in the wonderful backdrop, visitors can enjoy homemade treats including aromatic teas, patisserie, charcuterie, seafood, cheese and chocolate.
Summer at Crathes also features wares from local crafters including tweed accessories, silverware and artwork. To ensure everyone has a chance to drop by, the event runs for three days from Friday 6th – Sunday 8th July, 10am to 5pm. Entry is £4 for adults and free for children. Tickets can be purchased at the fair.
Vegan Festival UK
For plant based foods and vegan products, head to Vegan Festival UK, held at Aberdeen Football Club. This event offers a great opportunity to discover new and hard-to-find dietary products, learn about the lifestyle and meet others in the community.
Expect passionate vegan and ethical traders serving up baked goods, flavoursome lunches and take-home essentials. Tickets are £2 in advance or £3 on entry for adults and can be bought here. The event takes place on Sunday 8th July 10.30am-4.30pm.
Thistle Street Food Market
For the chance to indulge in local street food and produce, head over to the Thistle Street Food Market, in Aberdeen’s West End. On offer is a mixture of courses and beverages from 16 different stalls. Barbecue aficionados Angus & Oink will be serving up their steaks and new Kölsch style beer. Sweet Toots Cakery will be satisfying sweet cravings with their colourful bakes, and Teasmith Gin are in attendance to help visitors wash everything down with their unique botanical tipple.
This event is free to attend and runs from 14th July - 11th August, between 10am and 3pm each day.
