Five tips for moving house with children

Moving house with kids is never an easy task. However, we have a few tips for parents, ahead of moving day, to make sure the move goes smoothly.

Make them feel comfortable beforehand

Some children may love a move – especially if it means they get a bigger room.

It’s important to make sure that they feel comfortable with their new home. If possible, it is a good idea to take children with you on a second viewing, so they know exactly where they will be living.

If you have time, it’s a good idea to go for a wander with your children around the area, especially if it is in a different neighbourhood, or different school district.

Get them involved

Depending on their age, there are different things that children can get involved with when it comes to moving.

Packing is, of course, one of the simplest things for older children to do, and can be a big help. No matter their age, it can be a good idea to pack a box of essentials, be it a favourite toy or book, a pair of pyjamas and clothes for the next day, to make the first full day go as smoothly as possible.

For those a little younger, who may not be able to pack, they can still get involved! For example, they can make (or decorate) signs for each room, to match corresponding labels on any packing boxes. This will allow the movers to take boxes for the kitchen directly to the kitchen, playroom boxes straight to the playroom, and so on.

This helps them feel like part of the move.

Give them something to look forward to

Planning how to decorate the room can be a big deal for children – especially if it’s the first time they get to choose their own paint colour and design. Taking children (or even teenagers) to shops to choose their curtains and paint can add a sense of excitement and make them look forward to the move.

As an added anticipation, you can offer to host a sleepover for friends once the room is finished, so they can show off their hard work.

Ask a friend or family to babysit

On the day of the big move, it’s key to make sure your children don’t get bored – or underfoot of the movers. If you have a family member or friend who can look after the little ones, this can be a good idea – and then they can be welcomed to their new home at the end of the day once the movers are gone!

Make the first night fun

If your children are away for the move, what could be more exciting than them arriving to their new home to see a big ‘welcome home’ banner, and some of their toys ready and waiting?

You’ll probably not want to cook, so why not have a picnic on the floor with a chippie, as part of the adventure.

With their box for the first night, they’ll have something familiar nearby, making the house seem instantly like home.
